Lunigiana is in the northern part of Tuscany, between Liguria and Pianura Padana. It’s one of the most scenic areas of the region, and is the location of 3 valleys surrounded by rivers. Its borders derive from the ancient Roman settlement, later the medieval diocese of Luni, which no longer exists. It’s a region of medieval villages with historic Romanic churches and over 100 castles.

You can visit the little towns in the area or learn about local culture and history in such places as the Museum of the Lunigiana Stele Statues of Pontremoli, the Abbey of San Caprasio, and the Ethnographic Museum of Villafranca.
Pontremoli View
The medieval castles and Romanic churches attract thousands of visitors from around the world. Among the most famous castles in Lunigiana is the Piagnaro Castle of Pontremoli, which is on a hill in the centre of the medieval town. Its artefacts date from the Roman era.

The Aquila Castle of Gragnola was built as a stronghold during medieval times, and was the seat of a Marquisate in the 14th century. The castle was eventually abandoned and destroyed during the 1920 earthquake. However, the ruins were bought by an individual who is completely restoring the castle, which will reopen to tourists.

A visit to Lunigiana would not be complete without a tour of the Candia & Lunigiana Hills Wine Route. The wine trail overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. Many of the region’s castles from medieval times are located along the route. Take the tour to visit the famous wineries, trattorias, and facilities that press olives.
