Furore has lots of history dating back to the Roman Age and also one of the most attractive features of this town is the Open Air Museum, which consists of many beautiful paintings decorating the outside walls of the buildings. Meanwhile, the town of Atrani has its own individual claim to fame as it has been depicted in artwork such as Metamorphosis I, II and III by the Dutch artist M.C. Escher.
Escher is best known for his woodcuts, lithographs and mezzotints. He lived in Italy for a large portion of his life, even settling down in Italy when he first married. He loved the Italian scenery, especially Atrani and so this is why it appears in many of his different works. Aside from Escher, the town also has much to do with the Church, and the ruins of the Benedictine Monastery of Saints Quirico and Judith can be seen there still.
