citta di castello town
A city in the province of Perugia in Umbria, Citta di Castello is situated neatly in the central portion of Italy.

This thriving city on the slope of the Apennines has changed hands a multitude of times over the centuries. It was originally founded by the Umbri tribes before being ruled by the Romans, the Guelphs, the Ghibellines, and the Vitelli family.

Pliny the Younger made his residence in a nearby villa, which is still recognizable from its marble walls and mosaics. While expanding throughout history, what remains now is a city built mostly out of brick, containing several notable sights for visitors and art aficionados.

The idyllic countryside surrounding this city is well known for its production of ceramics, textiles, and home furnishings.

When you visit Citta di Castello, you'll want to visit the medieval Palazzo Comunale, or People's Palace. A tall, thin tower called the Torre Comunale dominates the landscape, and there is also an art museum located here with some interesting Renaissance works.

This includes external decorations completed by the famous Renaissance architect, artist, and biographer Giorgio Vasari.

A cathedral in the town centre dates back to the 12th century, but it has been reworked many times over the ages. What remains is mainly from the 18th century, and it houses important works by artists such as Raffaellino del Colle and Rosso Fiorentino.

Modern art also plays a role in the works of this preserved city, which includes a memorial to the abstract artist Alberto Burri. He was born in Citta di Castello, and to celebrate this fact the city has erected a museum in his honour.

It is housed in the former Palazza Albizzini, and includes a large permanent collection of his various paintings and sculptures.

Travelling through this area allows art historians and enthusiasts see a wide range of Italian art, from medieval to modern times. Taking a stroll around the cobblestone streets is a worthy pastime in and of itself, with the preserved architecture and quaint cafes.
