Vendicari Nature Reserve In Sicily

Vendicari Nature Reserve
This is really one place that you cannot miss in case you are spending your holidays in the south eastern part of Sicily. The nature reserve VENDICARI was instituted in 1984 and offers a wide variety of flora and fauna - you will find a mixture of sandy beaches, dunes and lagoons here.

There are 3 entrances to the park, situated off the Noto-Pachino road. For all entrances you will have to park you car and walk to get to the beaches which is actually quite pleasant ! Just be sure to bring your own food and drinks since there are no lidos or bars in this area.
Vendicari Nature Reserve
Apart from the lovely beaches, this is an ornithologists' paradise !! Thousands of migrating birds pass some days here on their way to or from Africa: Herons, flamingos and cormorants are to be found regularly during the autumn and in the winter you can see ducks, mallards, pintails and terns. Among the few species to breed here, there are black-winged stilt – adopted as the emblem of Vendicari - as well as Kentish plover, little tern, reed warbler and little bittern. There are several little wooden hides for birdwatchers (bring your binoculars !!).

The reserve also contains a number of archeological remains which include traces of storage jars from an old fishery and, nearby, the remains of a small necropolis.
