Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia, and has been a major port on the Mediterranean since the 7th century BC. Like many important sites across Italy the city has changed ownership many, many times but one thing remains the same: the cultural and natural beauty that can be found all around. Despite the gorgeous palazzi, the soaring domes of the city, and the large castello district that is an ever-present site that dominates the city skyline the city has always been a busy working port city.
With the myriad of influences that remain in Cagliari from the different occupations you will see a different side of Italy from your villa rental in Sardinia, but what a beautiful side to see!

Near the seaport is the Piazza Matteotti, which if you arrive by bus or train will most likely where you will arrive as the main terminals are located there, as well as the city tourism office. In the marina neighborhood you will find many delightful restaurants, full of delicious offerings from the sea. Be sure to visit the castello district, where you can visit the stunning Cattedrale di Santa Maria which contains a myriad of architecture ranging from parts of the original 13th century structure, to an 1800's baroque interior, and a 20th century Romanesque imitation facade. The Cathedral has an interesting symmetry with the city itself, the different architectures through time seem to mimic the different civilizations that controlled Cagliari at different times.
Inside the former arsenal, the Citadella dei Musei, you will find four different museums. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale is the most visited with exhibits ranging from prehistoric to Roman era. Pinacoteca Nazionale boasts a collection of art from the 15th, 16th and 17th century including works from Pietro Cavaro who is one of Sardinia's most important artists. The other two museums are a little out of the main stream: Raccolta di Cere Anatomiche has an almost macabre collection of anatomical wax statues and the Museo d’Arte Siamese has an myriad of works from Asia including art, various crafts and weaponry.
The city has undergone recent changes in an attempt to better accommodate its rising number of tourists. The old port near the main road of Via Roma has been designated for only tourists and cruises and shut to commerce in favor of the newer porto canale. A museum is under construction currently to house many prehistoric artifacts found all over Sardinia from the Nuragic civilization. These, along with many other improvements are planned for the near future so when you book your vacation rental in Sardinia with swimming pool, you will have both the past and the future to look forward too!
