Molise is probably the least well-known region of Italy and, until 1970, was actually part of Abruzzo. However, this south-central region, nestled between the Apennines and Adriatic, is an absolute gem just waiting to be discovered. This region is characterised by its lonely, dramatic landscapes, nature reserves, history and enduring traditions. Handicrafts, professions and customs that have died out elsewhere remain alive in Molise and its landscape is dotted with archaeological sites, abbeys, castles, quaint little towns and villages and unique features like the “trabucchi” (fishing platforms) of seaside town Termoli.

For city life, head to Isernia or Campobasso, though the charm of this region is its sprawling countryside. Be sure to take in some of the food traditions, as well as the cultural ones with dairy products, in particular, being a speciality. The caciocavallo and stracciata cheeses of Agnone and Alto Molise, mozzarella from Boiano, buffalo mozzarella from Venafro and pecorino sheep’s cheese from Matese are all musts and will help round out a fantastic experience of Molise.
